10 Best Holiday Films

Ten of the best holiday movies
The eggnog is prepared, the ham and turkey are baking in the oven.  The house is neatly organized. What is man or a woman to do? The soca parang just is not enough. Why not indulge yourself in these wonderful holiday treats to get you into the festive spirit.

It is a Wonderful Life? (1946)
Speaking of wonderful, we have the classic story of an angel who helps a depressed man examine what life would be if he was non-existent. I am not a big crier when it comes to movies but I will admit it is a tear jerker.

Elf (2003)
I am not much of a Will Ferrel fan but I will admit it isn’t Christmas if I don’t partake in this film. Will Ferrel stars as a human who was raised in the North Pole in Santa’s factory.

Miracle on 34th street (1947)
This is another Christmas classic that is a must see film. It stars  a young Natalie Wood, Maureen O’Hara, John Payne and Edmund Gwenn. It tells the story of a man who works in a department store as Santa Claus as he seeks to prove that he indeed the real Saint Nic.

The Nightmare before Christmas (1993)
Let’s get animated with this juxtaposition of Halloween and Christmas with the Nightmare before Christmas. The movie is about Jack Skellington who lives in a fictional town by the name of Halloween Town who somehow finds himself in Christmas Town. While he is there he decides to engage in the festival which results in humorous series of events. If you love Tim Burton as much as I do then of course, this is a must see film for you.

The Santa Clause (1994)
Is Dad really Santa Claus? This movie will have you giving your father strange looks. Starring Tim Allen in the titular role it is the first in the Santa Clause Trilogy. Allen’s character of Scott Calvin accidentally causes the real Santa Claus to fall off of his roof on Christmas Eve. It is up to him and his son Charlie to finish Santa’s deliveries. Eventually Scott replaces the old Santa by becoming the new one. It is such a great movie to watch with the entire family.

Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch that stole Christmas (2000)
It may be number six on my list but Oh boy do I love this movie. Maybe because I can be a Grinch myself when it comes to the holidays and well I always end up rooting for him. LOL. It stars Jim Carey as the Grinch. He hates Christmas and the people of Whoville with such a passion. One curious little girl by the name of Cindy Lou (Taylor Momsen of Gossip Girl fame). The back story of the Grinch is one of the many reasons why I am tempted not to judge people for their behaviour. This is another movie that always brings me to tears.

Polar Express (2004)
It is the classic story of a young lad who takes a wonderful train ride to the North Pole. It stars Tom Hanks and well who doesn’t love Tom Hanks. It is one of the great animated movies that even an adult will enjoy.

A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)
It isn’t quite Christmas if we don’t include members of the Peanut gang.  The story goes that Charlie Brown is feeling rather blue so Lucy comes up with the idea to direct the school concert. He is of course ridiculed and ignored by his classmates. As many holiday classic seeks out to do, it reminds us about the true meaning of Christmas and rejects the over-commercialization and secularism of Christmas. It has a great message and is a must see movie especially to watch with young children.

Home Alone (1990)
Home Alone is every 90s kids favorite film.  The movie catapulted Macaulay Culkin into stardom. It was one of the highest grossing action comedy film until being beaten by The Hangover Part Two in 2011. I couldn’t get over the fact that the parents left Kevin home once but with the fact that it happens a second time is unbelievable. The movie tells the story of a young mischievous child by the name of Kevin McCallister who must protect his family home from burglars after he is left alone by his family during the Christmas holidays. It is quite a comical film.

A Christmas Story (1983)
All nine (9) year old Ralphie Parker wants for Christmas is a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle with a compass in the stock and a sundial. Unfortunately he met with opposition from every adult in his life from his mother, his teacher, even from the department store Santa Claus. They all issue the warning “You will shoot your eye out.” This is a classic Christmas story that is enjoyed by all who watch it.

Hope you enjoy my suggestions.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
